Backstamps
Although very different
designs, curiously both the two first class patterns known as "Wisteria"
and "Gothic Arch / "Mitre" pattern exhibit identical pattern
registration numbers as shown above. The patterns were never named and
can be found on chinaware used by the Red Star Line and on an Australian
Yacht Club china.
Registration
number 117214 dates from 1889 and number 324028 dates from 1898. As mentioned elsewhere
Stonier & Co
LTD
of Liverpool where the supply agents for the White Star Line, not
manufacturers of the chinaware that carries their name.
There are different
permutations of back stamp marks, two as shown above are typical, as are
no marks at all, some without the word "Liverpool". Some have manufacturing
dates (e.g., 3/1906) some do not, all of which suggests that many makers
in the Potteries made this china.
